Justice @ The Electric Factory
Justice got their start in early 2003 by remixing some popular French tracks that were eventually picked up by local radio stations. The duo released their first full-length album in June of 2007 and it has made several album of the year lists including Pitchfork’s Top 50 Albums of 2007. Many have compared their sound to Daft Punk due to their use of rock samples and flashy stage shows.
Last night’s show which was presented by Myspace, opened with a set featuring DJ Mehdi and Fancy. The duo split an hour and a half that intertwined hip-hop, a lot of French tracks I wasn’t familiar with, a little Daft Punk and even some Justice peppered throughout (which I found to be strange). As Justice prepared to enter the stage at 9:30, black shrouds were removed from their stage setup; two massive stacks of Marshall speaker cabinets and a bunch of racks full of equipment that seemed to be exploding with lights. As the set opened with Genesis, I realized the volume was significantly louder than the opening act. The audience sprang to life and the rest of the show was seriously a blur - because I was dancing my ass off. Gaspard and Xavier played through their short repertoire of tracks (everything off the album †) a few of which were remixed versions such as a slowed down D.A.N.C.E.. The incredible set came to an abrupt end, about an hour and a half in, which left me a little disappointed and wondering why they didn’t have more material. It would have been interesting to hear them play some of the many remixes they have worked on with other artists.
The party continued at Transit with several other DJs and a “surprise guest” which I’m guessing was Justice. I didn’t make it out because myself and my friend both had to get back home to take care of some things. All in all, totally worth it and if you haven’t checked out Justice you should definitely give their album a listen.
